(DC Pundit) – According to a private congressional funding notice that fell into the hands of the Washington Free Beacon, the U.S. government thought it would be a splendid idea to send $15 million of taxpayer money to Afghanistan for the distribution of “oral contraceptives and condoms.” Because nothing says “basic rights and freedoms” like a government-sponsored birth control bonanza in a country run by religious extremists.
This peculiar care package was part of a larger $100 million aid bundle aimed at supporting women and girls living under Taliban rule.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the masterminds behind this scheme, admitted that some coordination with the Taliban would be necessary for “programmatic purposes.” This raises the question: Did anyone at USAID consider that “coordinating” with the Taliban might be as easy as trying to nail jelly to a wall?
“Although some coordination will be necessary for programmatic purposes, USAID and its partners are clear that there will be no direct assistance to the Taliban,” the notice stated.
The timing of this funding is impeccable, coming just months before a federal oversight body determined that the government had failed to adequately combat gender-based violence in Afghanistan. It’s almost as if throwing contraceptives at a deeply rooted societal issue isn’t a magic fix. Who would have thought?
This revelation comes on the heels of President Donald Trump’s decision to put a 90-day pause on foreign aid to review and evaluate all foreign assistance programs. While he is busy trying to “Make America Great Again,” the previous administration was busy making Afghanistan… less fertile?
Meanwhile, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast is on a mission to trim the fat from the State Department’s nearly $90 billion budget. “We will be doing a full State Department reauthorization,” Mast declared during a recent congressional roundtable discussion. “We will wake up, eat, sleep, and breathe to root out waste in the State Department and make America the partner of choice.”
In a world where taxpayer dollars are being used to provide birth control in a country that denies women many basic rights, one has to ask: did the Biden administration simply lose the plot?
Supporting women in Afghanistan is undoubtedly noble, although the execution leaves much to be desired. While perhaps well-intentioned, spending $15 million of the American taxpayer’s money on this is just absurd.
