The network, under the umbrella of parent company Disney, is slashing jobs and severing ties with 538, the once-vaunted polling and data operation founded by Nate Silver. Apparently, even Mickey can’t save the liberal press from the harsh realities of a Trump-dominated political landscape.
Disney, grappling with its own corporate woes—perhaps too many overpriced Dole Whips or a few too many flops at the box office—has decided to trim the fat. According to The Hill, “ABC News Group is eliminating its political arm, 538, which specializes in polling, surveys and data, amid wider layoffs at the Walt Disney parent company.” The cuts will see 200 employees pink-slipped across the company and its Disney Entertainment Networks unit, a modest 6 percent of the workforce. At 538 specifically, 15 staffers are being shown the door.
The demise of 538 is particularly poetic, and Republicans can’t help but smirk at the irony. Breitbart News reported: “The most interesting nugget is the news that ABC is shutting down the once-popular 538, the site created by Nate Silver touted as a data-driven piece of science that would predict the outcome of elections, along with things like the Oscars and sporting events.” Under Silver’s reign, the site enjoyed a golden age of credibility—until Trump stormed onto the scene in 2016. Suddenly, those fancy algorithms started spitting out more fairy tales than facts, and 538’s reputation took a nosedive faster than a lead balloon. Silver bailed in 2023, leaving his brainchild to flounder. By 2024, with Trump back in the Oval Office, the site’s election predictions were about as reliable as a weather forecast from a groundhog. “So sad. Buh-bye,” Breitbart quipped, and you can almost hear the collective “good riddance” from GOP voters nationwide.
This isn’t just a corporate restructuring—it’s a reckoning. The same media outlets that spent years dismissing Trump’s appeal, from MSNBC to CNN, have been hemorrhaging viewers and credibility since his latest victory. Now ABC joins the club. The layoffs and the axing of 538 signal a broader truth: the American public, particularly the Republican base, is fed up with sanctimonious talking heads and their “data-driven” drivel that conveniently aligns with left-wing talking points.
