(DC Pundit) – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also known as the Democratic Party’s self-appointed firebrand from New York, is once again making headlines, this time with a finger-wagging warning to President Donald Trump’s administration following the arrest of several Democrats during a protest at an ICE detention facility in New Jersey.
During a Sunday Instagram rant, because apparently that’s the new Capitol Hill press conference, AOC threatened that the Trump administration would be facing a “problem” if law enforcement dares to arrest more of her fellow Democrats. “You lay a finger on someone… we are going to have a problem,” she declared, sounding more like a frustrated hall monitor than a sitting member of Congress.
The outrage from AOC stems from the recent arrests of Democratic Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver, as well as Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, at the Delaney Hall detention center. According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Democrats were part of a crowd that became physically confrontational during their protest visit. ICE officials claimed there was pushing and shoving among the demonstrators, who were supposedly crossing more than just figurative lines.
Naturally, the Democrats denied the accusations, accusing the Trump administration of turning law enforcement into a political weapon. Rep. Watson Coleman didn’t hold back, telling MSNBC, “To take the mayor of the largest city in the state of New Jersey and put him in handcuffs and then take him away… This is not America. This is the sick man’s idea of what he thinks he can do to any one of us.”
Ah yes, the familiar Democratic refrain: laws don’t apply when they’re the ones breaking them.
AOC, never one to miss a chance at hyperbole, claimed the Department of Homeland Security was guilty of “public intimidation” and tried to shift the blame squarely on officials like former ICE Director Tom Homan and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. “If anyone’s breaking the law in this situation, it’s not members of Congress,” she insisted.
Of course, many would argue that trespassing, interfering with federal operations, and resisting law enforcement might actually qualify as “breaking the law,” even for Democrats. But in AOC’s world, protesting an ICE facility while in office is apparently some kind of sacred rite.
President Trump has made border security and immigration enforcement a top priority, which is why antics like these aren’t being tolerated. When sitting members of Congress get themselves arrested for grandstanding at federal facilities, don’t be surprised if the Justice Department finally decides to stop treating them like celebrities and start treating them like citizens—ones who aren’t above the law.
And while Ocasio-Cortez might think she’s issuing bold ultimatums on behalf of her progressive crew, the rest of the country sees it for what it is: another temper tantrum over the fact that Trump is actually enforcing the law.
Welcome to America under Trump 2.0. If you break the law, whether you’re a protester, a mayor, or member of congress, don’t expect a get-out-of-jail-free card. The rules apply to everyone now.
And judging by the reaction from the left, that might be the real problem.
