(DC Pundit) – If you ever feel the need to email yourself about how “by the book” a high-stakes meeting was, odds are…it wasn’t.
That’s exactly what Susan Rice, former National Security Advisor to Barack Obama, did on January 20, 2017, just as Donald Trump was being sworn in as President of the United States. She drafted a suspiciously detailed email to herself memorializing a meeting held in the Oval Office on January 5, just two weeks prior. And now, thanks to declassified documents released by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, we know exactly why she was scrambling to hit “send.”
According to the documents, Obama’s top-tier intelligence circle, including James Clapper, John Brennan, John Kerry, Loretta Lynch, Andrew McCabe, and Rice herself, met in December 2016 to strategize over what to do with the Trump-Russia narrative they knew was built on air. These weren’t security briefings. They were storytelling sessions. And the ending they wanted was impeachment.

As reported in the newly released material, Barack Obama was well aware by December 9, 2016, that the “Russia collusion” theory had no foundation. But instead of shutting it down, his administration accelerated it, fueling one of the most expensive and dishonest political smear campaigns in American history.
Enter: Rice’s email. In it, she claims Obama instructed Comey to proceed “by the book.” You’d think a commander-in-chief with nothing to hide wouldn’t need his national security advisor to document that sentiment with a self-addressed email during her final moments in office. But alas, here we are.
Senator Chuck Grassley, who flagged the email years ago, was just as puzzled then as most of us are now. In a 2018 letter to Rice, Grassley asked: “Why, of all things, would you take time on your last day to log a conversation where President Obama allegedly instructed the FBI to follow proper procedure?” He rightly pointed out that the need to memorialize routine behavior usually means it wasn’t so routine.
And now that we’ve seen just how “by the book” these folks really were, from the Steele Dossier fantasy novel to secretive FISA warrants on Trump’s campaign, Grassley’s suspicions have aged like a fine wine.
Let’s be clear: Rice didn’t send that email to document protocol. She sent it to build a paper trail in case things unraveled. And now, thanks to the transparency brought under Trump’s leadership, they are unraveling at record speed.

With hearings expected to resume, and accountability finally becoming more than just a conservative talking point, don’t be surprised if this little email becomes Exhibit A. As for Rice, it might be time to send another email, this time, to a good legal team.
