(DC Pundit) – The Department of Justice has convened a grand jury to investigate New York Attorney General Letitia James, a move that signals the fight between President Donald Trump and the Empire State’s top prosecutor has entered an entirely new phase.
Sources told Fox News Digital the investigation is being run out of Albany and is focused on possible “deprivation of rights” allegations. James’s office has reportedly been served with subpoenas demanding documents, including material tied to her high-profile civil fraud lawsuit against President Trump.
If that wasn’t enough legal heat, United States Attorney General Pam Bondi has green-lit a special prosecutor, Ed Martin, to look into separate mortgage fraud claims involving James and California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff. A grand jury in Virginia will review the James case, while Schiff’s matter will be examined in Maryland.
James, a Democrat elected in 2018, wasted no time after taking office targeting the Trump Organization. She ultimately brought civil charges in 2022, securing a staggering $454 million judgment against Trump and several company executives — including two of his sons. A New York judge ruled Trump’s wealth had been inflated to secure favorable loans and benefits, a claim Trump and his legal team have fiercely disputed from day one.

At the time, James declared that “financial fraud” was not a “victimless crime,” adding, “If average New Yorkers went into a bank and submitted false documents, the government would throw the book at them, and the same should be true for former presidents.” In other words, James has been more than happy to position herself as the Democrats’ legal wrecking ball against Trump.
Now, the tables may be turning. A spokesperson for James tried to frame the DOJ’s action as political, saying, “Any weaponization of the justice system should disturb every American.” That’s quite the statement coming from someone who built her political brand on suing both the Trump administration and the National Rifle Association — often with suspicious timing that just so happened to benefit her party’s political interests.
The current DOJ probe is still in its early stages, but make no mistake, convening a grand jury is no small matter. These panels examine evidence, question witnesses, and decide if there’s probable cause to bring charges. And historically, once prosecutors get to this point, indictments are far more likely than not.
The mortgage fraud allegations also add another layer of trouble for James. In April, the Trump-led Federal Housing Finance Agency requested an investigation, which resulted in the DOJ opening a separate inquiry. Bondi’s special prosecutor, Ed Martin, is leading both the mortgage case against James and the Schiff investigation. Martin also heads a DOJ “weaponization” task force, which may explain why the left is suddenly squealing about prosecutorial overreach.
James has denied the mortgage-related claims, but it’s clear the pressure is mounting. For years, she’s been the one firing legal shots at Trump. Now she’s the one in the crosshairs, facing the same kind of prosecutorial scrutiny she’s wielded so aggressively against others.
For President Trump’s supporters, this moment feels a lot like long-overdue accountability. Whether or not charges ultimately stick, the message is clear: even the Democrat darlings who treat the law like a political tool can find themselves on the receiving end of its power. And for James, the days of comfortably throwing stones from her Albany glass house may be coming to an end.
