(DC Pundit) – NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell decided to double down on the league’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies during his annual pre-Super Bowl news conference on Monday. This despite President Donald Trump’s landslide victory in the 2024 election and subsequent efforts to dismantle DEI nationwide, prompting one social media user to label the commissioner as “tone-deaf.”
Goodell’s pledge came in response to a question that was about as subtle as a linebacker blitz. The journalist asked, “In light of Trump’s White House and many companies in corporate America dismantling DEI, how has that made the NFL more steadfast? Have you had feedback from owners, corporate partners, other entities in terms of how the NFL addresses its DEI policies?”
The phrase “how has that made the NFL more steadfast?” left no room for the possibility that the NFL might actually reconsider its stance. It’s almost as if they were reading from the same playbook.
Goodell, never one to miss an opportunity to fumble the truth, proceeded to gaslight listeners for nearly two straight minutes. “We got into diversity efforts because we felt it was the right thing for the National Football League. And we’re going to continue those efforts because we’ve not only convinced ourselves, [but] I think we’ve proven ourselves that it does make the NFL better,” the commissioner said, apparently forgetting that correlation doesn’t equal causation.

The NFL adopted the “Rooney Rule” in 2003, named after the late Steelers owner Dan Rooney. This rule initially required teams to interview at least one “diverse” candidate for head-coaching vacancies. The league has since expanded the rule to cover other staff positions, such as general manager and coordinator. By “diverse,” of course, they mean not white.
Goodell then went on to claim that DEI policies are “fundamental in trying to attract the best possible talent into the National Football League, both on and off the field.” This statement is about as accurate as claiming that a blindfolded quarterback throws the most accurate passes. DEI, by definition, has nothing to do with attracting the best possible talent. It’s like saying you’re going to find the fastest runner by focusing on their shoe size.
The commissioner added a defense of the Rooney Rule to his expanding list of questionable statements. “The Rooney Rule, for us, is not — there’s no requirement to hire a particular individual on basis of race or gender. It’s simply on the basis of looking at a — uh, uh, uh — canvas of candidates that reflect our communities,” he remarked.
Trump’s administration has been taking a sledgehammer to DEI policies nationwide, and public opinion, as reflected by his election, has put corresponding pressure on many businesses and corporations. One social media user summed it up perfectly: “Wow, talk about being tone-deaf,” adding a clown emoji for good measure.

Another user, demonstrating more common sense than the entire NFL front office, described DEI as “literally the opposite of getting best talent.”
Goodell’s statements are about as transparent as a defensive lineman’s excuse for roughing the passer. The league proudly uses skin color to determine a pool of coaching candidates but doesn’t apply the same logic to the NFL draft. There, players rise and fall on merit alone, as they should. It’s almost as if they recognize that on-field performance actually matters.
Moreover, DEI policies conveniently don’t apply to franchise ownership. The owners exempt themselves from the same scrutiny they apply to their coaches and general managers.
If skin color is so crucial in determining coaching or executive positions, why doesn’t the same argument apply to the wealthiest people in the league — the owners?
It’s time for the NFL to tackle its inconsistencies head-on and realize that true diversity comes from embracing talent, regardless of background. Until then, they’ll continue to fumble the ball on this important issue.
