(DC Pundit) – There are political statements, and then there are statements about your character. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill just made both at the same time.

Following the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, the Trump White House issued a proclamation directing U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff nationwide through Saturday evening in remembrance of the longtime South Carolina Republican. It is a straightforward, time-honored tradition of honoring the passing of a sitting United States Senator. Sherrill apparently couldn’t bring herself to do it.

State flag status records confirmed that flags at the New Jersey Capitol remained at full-staff as of midday Thursday. A New Jersey Department of State website tracking flag status also indicated “all flags full-staff” on Thursday, a direct snub of both the White House directive and the memory of a man who served his country for decades.

State Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-Boonton) had formally requested the governor lower the flags earlier in the week following Graham’s death, and he didn’t mince words about what Sherrill’s refusal says about her administration.

“This is probably the most political [Trenton administration], and she’s only been there six months — probably the most political governor I’ve served with in the last 25 years,” Pennacchio told Fox News Digital.

Six months in office. That’s all it took for Sherrill to establish herself as someone willing to use a man’s death as a vehicle for partisan point-scoring.

This is the same Democratic Party that turns around and blames Donald Trump for the division in this country. The same party whose members were caught openly celebrating Graham’s passing on social media within hours of the news breaking. And when they’re not celebrating, they’re doing exactly what Sherrill did, stripping away even the most basic gestures of common decency and human respect because the deceased had an R next to his name.

Mikie Sherrill is a former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor who won the New Jersey governorship in 2025. She positioned herself as a moderate during the campaign. There is nothing moderate about refusing to lower a flag for a dead United States Senator out of pure political spite.

These moments have a way of sticking. Voters remember who people really are in times of tragedy, and Sherrill just showed them exactly who she is.

(DC Pundit) – More details have emerged following the sudden passing of Senator Lindsey Graham, and the picture is becoming clearer, even if questions surrounding the timing of his death continue to linger online.

Preliminary findings from the Washington, D.C., medical examiner indicate that Graham died from an aortic dissection, a condition in which a tear develops in the inner layer of the body’s main artery, the aorta. According to Graham’s office, the dissection was caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, a condition in which plaque buildup narrows and hardens the arteries, restricting blood flow. Audio from the 911 dispatch call confirms that Graham had chest pains before going into cardiac arrest.

In short, this was a catastrophic cardiovascular event. Aortic dissections are notoriously sudden and often fatal, even in hospital settings. They are also associated with long-term arterial disease, not the kind of condition that develops overnight or is caused by external factors. For those still speculating about foul play in connection with Graham’s recent trip to Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Zelensky just days before his death, the medical examiner’s preliminary findings offer a straightforward, if heartbreaking, explanation.

As for what comes next in South Carolina, President Trump addressed the question of Graham’s Senate seat during an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday. Trump said he already has someone in mind for the role, but chose not to reveal the name out of respect for the late senator.

“I have somebody that I think would be great, but I don’t want to say it now because it’s just, you know, it’s too soon with Lindsey,” Trump said. “I don’t want to even talk about anybody, but I do have somebody that I think is really good.”

That kind of restraint is worth acknowledging. Graham’s death was announced just hours earlier, and the political class has a well-earned reputation for moving on from these moments faster than most people change their voicemail. Trump’s decision to pump the brakes — publicly, at least — reflects a degree of decorum that Washington doesn’t always manage.

Under South Carolina law, Governor Henry McMaster holds the authority to appoint Graham’s replacement, who will serve until January 3. Whether Trump’s preferred candidate and McMaster’s eventual pick are one and the same remains to be seen. What is certain is that Graham’s seat, on the Armed Services Committee, the Judiciary Committee, and in the broader fabric of Senate Republican politics, will not be easy to fill.

Lindsey Graham served South Carolina for more than two decades. Whatever one thought of his positions over the years, his absence will be felt.

(DC Pundit) – The world woke up to stunning news early Sunday morning: longtime South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham has passed away. He was 71 years old.

An official statement released by his office confirmed that the senior Republican Senator died on Saturday evening, July 11, after a brief, rapid battle with an undisclosed illness.

Emergency personnel responded to a call for “cardiac arrest” at Graham’s Capitol Hill home on Saturday night, according to police scanner audio. Paramedics carried a person on a stretcher from Graham’s home to an awaiting ambulance, with police cars and fire trucks also on site.

The news came as a complete shock to those close to him. A top staffer to Graham told NBC News early Sunday that there was no indication the lawmaker was feeling unwell prior to his death. He had been scheduled to appear on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” on Sunday morning.

Graham was fresh off a trip to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, just hours before his death. That timeline has not gone unnoticed. Social media erupted with speculation almost immediately, with Joey Mannarino stating on X, “Lindsey Graham just left Ukraine about 24 hours ago and is suddenly dead after a ‘brief and sudden illness.’ I hope they do a very thorough autopsy because this is *extremely* odd.”

Adding fuel to the fire: earlier this month, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps publicly called for Graham’s assassination.

To be clear, at 71 years old, the most likely and medically straightforward explanation is that Graham suffered a heart attack from natural causes, nothing at this stage confirms any foul play. But given the circumstances, a high-profile trip to an active war zone, a recent public death threat from a hostile foreign government, and a death that came with no prior warning, it would be irresponsible not to demand a thorough and transparent autopsy. The American people deserve answers.

Graham served South Carolina in the U.S. Senate since 2003, following a career in the U.S. Air Force and years in the House of Representatives. A close ally of the late Senator John McCain, Graham was one of the most recognizable and influential voices in the Republican Party for more than two decades, known for his hawkish foreign policy positions and his outsized presence on the Senate Judiciary and Armed Services Committees.

Under South Carolina law, Governor Henry McMaster will appoint someone to fill Graham’s seat until January 3 of next year.

Rest in peace, Senator.

(DC Pundit) – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has never been shy about her priorities. And in case there was any remaining doubt about where she stands, she just made things crystal clear by pardoning a convicted murderer, and in the process, shutting down his deportation.

Whitmer granted Deda Malota Margilaj, 74, a full pardon on July 2, exactly 50 years after he was convicted of second-degree murder for shooting and killing a man at a Detroit gas station in 1975. He served four years. Four years for taking a man’s life. Then he stayed in the United States for the next half century, apparently without issue, until the Biden administration placed him in removal proceedings based on that 1978 conviction.

Enter Whitmer, riding to the rescue.

According to the Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice, which represented Margilaj, Whitmer’s pardon erases the basis for the removal proceedings and allows for their termination. So not only does this Albanian refugee avoid accountability for a decades-old murder conviction, he also gets to stay in the country. Two birds, one pardon.

The obvious question, the one that apparently nobody in the Michigan governor’s office bothered to ask, is how this man was allowed to remain in the United States for nearly five decades after being convicted of murder in the first place. Most Americans would assume that killing someone here as a foreign national would earn you a swift one-way ticket home. Apparently not in Michigan.

Some observers have noted that the pardon may not even matter legally, given the complexity of federal immigration proceedings.

But the symbolism matters plenty. A sitting Democratic governor looked at a convicted killer about to be removed from our country, and said, “No, actually, let’s not do that.”

This is the same party that lectures Americans about the rule of law, about compassion, about justice. Yet when it comes time to choose between a murder victim’s legacy and the man who took his life, Whitmer chose the latter, handing him a clean record.

The Democrats are making it very clear who they really represent, and it isn’t law-abiding Americans.

(DC Pundit) – Only in New York City, where a self-described socialist just won the mayoralty, would a senior city official think it was perfectly acceptable to schedule a cozy sit-down with the Iranian regime’s ambassador to the United Nations without telling anyone in Washington about it.

Commissioner Ana María Archila, head of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Office for International Affairs, had a meeting locked in for July 7 at 11 a.m. at 2 United Nations Plaza with Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran’s representative to the UN. Two other senior officials from the office were also slated to attend, according to calendar invitation screenshots reviewed by City Journal and confirmed by multiple sources, including a State Department official.

The meeting never happened, not because anyone in the Mamdani administration had second thoughts, but because President Trump’s State Department found out about it, stepped in, and met with the administration to “clarify acceptable conduct.”

The predictable damage-control statement from Archila’s office followed shortly after: “This meeting did not and will not take place.” Crisis managed. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Except there is quite a lot to see here.

Mamdani, the DSA-backed Marxist who somehow became the mayor of the largest city in the United States, has made it a priority to fill key positions with ideological allies rather than qualified professionals. Archila is a perfect example. A longtime activist and former co-director of the Working Families Party with precisely zero diplomatic experience, she was handed one of the most sensitive international-facing roles in city government as a political reward. The results speak for themselves.

And it gets worse. Archila’s office had already been caught circulating an internal directive instructing staff to prioritize diplomatic engagement with foreign officials who are “in political alignment/leftist.” This isn’t city business. This is rogue ideological foreign policy being conducted on the taxpayer’s dime, by people who have no business conducting any foreign policy whatsoever.

Iran is not a country that deserves the legitimacy of an official meeting with American municipal officials. It is a designated state sponsor of terrorism. Its leaders have American blood on their hands. The regime funds Hezbollah, Hamas, and a long list of terrorist proxies that have killed Americans and destabilized the Middle East for decades. The notion that a city commissioner would attempt to dignify that regime with an official sit-down, without informing the mayor, without notifying the State Department, without so much as a phone call to Washington, is not just reckless. It is jaw-dropping.

Thank goodness Trump’s State Department was paying attention. In a functioning government, local officials do not get to freelance their own foreign policy with America’s enemies. That’s not how sovereignty works. That’s not how national security works. And it is absolutely not how any of this should work.
