(DC Pundit) – In a twist that reads like a political thriller, Rep. Kay Granger, the 81-year-old Republican representing Texas’s 12th Congressional District since 1997, has been found after a six-month disappearing act.
Granger’s last public appearance was in July when she cast a vote against an amendment to slash the salary of the Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pesticide Programs to a whopping $1.
Enter Carlos Turcios, a reporter from the Dallas Express, who decided to play detective and uncover the mystery of the vanishing congresswoman. His first stop? Granger’s offices, where he was greeted by the oh-so-helpful voicemail:
“I am sorry we are unable to answer your phone right now,” Granger’s recorded voice chirped. “We are really glad you called us. Please leave your name, phone number and a brief message and someone in our office will call you back as soon as possible.”
Undeterred by this thrilling response, Turcios ventured to her constituency office, only to find it as lively as a morgue on a slow day. Just as he was about to throw in the towel, a local resident tipped him off that Granger might be residing in an assisted living facility specializing in memory care.
Bingo! Turcios hit the jackpot. His report reveals:
“We then received a tip from a Granger constituent who shared that the Congresswoman has been residing at a local memory care and assisted living home for some time after having been found wandering lost and confused in her former Cultural District/West 7th neighborhood. The Dallas Express team visited the facility to confirm whether Granger was residing there and to inquire about how she planned to vote on the spending bill. Upon arrival, two employees confirmed that Granger is indeed living at the facility. However, we were not permitted to conduct an interview regarding the current spending debate in the House of Representatives and how or if Ms. Granger planned to vote.”
Now, you might be wondering why Granger’s family or staff didn’t just come clean about her condition. Perhaps they thought nobody would notice if a member of Congress went AWOL for half a year?
State Republican Executive Committeeman Rolando Garcia called it a “sad and humiliating way to end her political career.” Ouch. Talk about a political eulogy.
The fact that Kay Granger is unable to leave her nursing home to participate in the most important congressional vote of the year suggests she was already in visible decline when she ran for re-election in 2022.
A sad and humiliating way to end her political career. Sad that… https://t.co/ElXhv6wWcW

But fear not, citizens of Texas’s 12th District! Granger had already announced her retirement at the end of this Congress. Come January, the seat will be filled by Craig Goldman, a Republican fresh from the Texas House of Representatives. Let’s hope he remembers to show up for work.
This bizarre episode raises some serious questions about transparency in politics and the care of aging public servants. It’s a good reminder that even in the high-stakes world of Washington, human frailty can’t be legislated away.
In the meantime, let’s all take a moment to appreciate the irony of a politician who’s been “found” in a memory care facility. It’s almost as if the universe has a sense of humor about the state of our political system.
