(DC Pundit) – The Trump administration is making it clear — Washington, D.C.’s days of tent cities taking over parks and sidewalks are numbered. For the remaining homeless encampments in the nation’s capital, the White House says the choice is simple: accept help, or accept a jail cell.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt laid it out plainly during a press briefing after reporters pressed for details on President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of D.C. law enforcement. According to Leavitt, the U.S. Park Police have already cleared seventy homeless encampments across the city, and now only two remain in federal park areas under the National Park Service. Both, she said, are on track to be removed before the week is out.
“Homeless shelters, for addiction and mental health services, or jail if they refuse, are the options on the table right now,” Leavitt stated, making it clear that the era of endless taxpayer-funded tolerance for lawlessness is over.

D.C.’s crime and homelessness crises have been spiraling for years under Democrat-run government, with public spaces transformed into makeshift camps that are unsafe for residents, tourists, and often for the homeless themselves. Instead of confronting the problem head-on, city leaders have opted for what amounts to little more than enabling, letting the problem fester while crime rates soar and businesses flee.

President Trump, now fully in control of D.C.’s law enforcement through the federalization of the Metropolitan Police Department, has pledged to restore law and order in the capital. Over the weekend, he described Washington, D.C., as “one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the world” and promised that his administration would “essentially, stop violent crime” in the nation’s capital.
And unlike the endless “task forces” and “studies” Democrats love to announce but never act on, this administration is already moving at full throttle. The joint operation between the Park Police and the now-federalized Metropolitan Police aims to dismantle the final encampments, while directing individuals to shelters where addiction recovery and mental health services are available. Those who refuse these services will not be left to camp out, they’ll be meeting a judge.
Trump has also floated the idea of relocating homeless encampments far outside the city, a move designed to ensure public spaces in D.C. remain clean, safe, and open to the public. Leavitt confirmed that option is still “being explored” but is not yet part of the immediate plan. Even so, it sends a strong message: the capital city is not going back to being an open-air homeless shelter.
The political left will no doubt accuse Trump of being “cruel” for enforcing laws and requiring people to accept help instead of sleeping in public parks. But for law-abiding taxpayers who’ve had to navigate tent-lined sidewalks, watch petty crime skyrocket, and see America’s capital become an embarrassment, the real cruelty was allowing this situation to spiral out of control in the first place.
It’s worth remembering that under Trump’s leadership, the mission is straightforward — protect citizens, uphold the law, and restore America’s capital to a city that reflects the dignity and strength of the nation it represents. And judging by how fast this operation is moving, it looks like that mission is already well underway.
