(DC Pundit) – Democrats gathered at their summer meeting this week, and once again managed to remind Americans why voters are fleeing their party in droves. Insha Rahman, one of the featured speakers, actually stood at the podium and told Democrats not to “take the bait” on President Trump’s efforts to crack down on crime in Washington, D.C. Her reasoning? According to Rahman, violent crimes like carjackings don’t even matter to many Americans.
Yes, in a city where carjackings have skyrocketed, Rahman decided it was wise to tell fellow Democrats that crime isn’t really a big deal. “Don’t take the bait because most Americans are more worried about how we are going to address mental health issues, the visible homelessness that we see on streets, and how do we deal with mental health and other issues that drive the sort of random incidents that scare all of us – that’s what you should be talking about,” she said.

This is the kind of thinking that has turned once-great cities into crime-ridden wastelands. Sure, mental health is an important issue, and homelessness plagues urban America. But pretending that carjackings and violent assaults aren’t a top concern? That’s willful blindness. Ask the victims in Washington, D.C. if they feel “random incidents” don’t matter. Tell that to families who won’t even drive into the city anymore because it’s become a live-action crime documentary.
Every time Democrats have a chance to show they’re even remotely connected to the daily concerns of ordinary Americans, they blow it. This was another prime example. Instead of acknowledging the obvious, that people want safe streets, working police departments, and criminals behind bars, Rahman advised Democrats to look the other way.

It’s not just tone-deaf, it’s politically suicidal. The left can keep pretending crime is just some minor annoyance while they obsess over “equity” and “root causes,” but Americans aren’t buying it. The reality is simple: if you can’t walk to your car without being threatened, robbed, or attacked, no amount of mental health spending is going to make you feel safer.
President Trump has made law and order a centerpiece of his administration, and for good reason. He recognizes that safety is the foundation for every other issue: jobs, schools, healthcare, and community stability. Without it, cities collapse, businesses flee, and families suffer. Democrats like Rahman may want to dodge the subject, but voters see the chaos firsthand.
If the Democratic Party takes her advice and continues dismissing violent crime, they’ll pay the price at the ballot box. Americans want leaders who protect them, not “experts” who lecture them about why their fears don’t matter. Carjackings aren’t some abstract political talking point. They’re real, they’re violent, and they’re happening daily. And until Democrats get serious about addressing it, they’re only digging their own political grave.
