(DC Pundit) – President Donald Trump isn’t wasting time when it comes to the chaos in Washington, D.C. On Monday, he pulled the trigger on Section 740 of the DC Home Rule Act — a rarely used measure that places the city’s Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control. The move comes alongside an authorization for the Secretary of Defense to deploy National Guard troops to clean up the mess.
Section 740 grants the president authority to take over the city’s police force during “special conditions of an emergency nature.” And by the looks of it, Trump believes the nation’s capital has crossed well into emergency territory. He signed two executive actions Monday — one invoking the powers under Section 740 and another sending formal notifications to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the relevant congressional committees. The law requires these notifications if the federal control will last beyond 48 hours.
A presidential memorandum also directed the Pentagon to put boots on the ground, and Trump gave governors the green light to keep their own National Guard troops on standby. “We will bring in the military if it’s needed,” Trump told reporters.

In classic Trump style, he didn’t sugarcoat the situation. “We’re formally declaring a public safety emergency. This is an emergency. This is a tragic emergency, and it’s embarrassing,” he said. If you’ve spent any time in D.C. lately, you probably know exactly what he’s talking about.

The president made it clear that the days of the nation’s capital acting as a safe haven for criminals — particularly illegal aliens — are over. “This city will no longer be a sanctuary for illegal alien criminals. We will have full, seamless, integrated cooperation at all levels of law enforcement, and we’ll deploy officers across the district with an overwhelming presence.”
Trump also hinted at a broader legislative push with congressional Republicans, targeting no-cash bail policies and “some of the other things” that have empowered criminals from D.C. to New York and beyond. This is the same soft-on-crime nonsense that’s been emptying jail cells while filling morgues in Democrat-run cities.
To lead the federalized police force, Trump tapped Terry Cole as the interim federal commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Department. Cole’s mission? Restore law and order in a city that’s been drowning in both violent crime and political dysfunction.
For years, residents have complained about rising crime, unchecked drug activity, and a revolving door justice system that releases violent offenders faster than police can book them. Now, D.C. may be on the verge of a law enforcement crackdown it hasn’t seen in decades.
While the left will undoubtedly cry “authoritarian,” regular citizens who just want to walk down the street without dodging bullets or stepping over drug needles may be breathing a sigh of relief. And that, frankly, is what leadership looks like.
And just imagine — if Kamala Harris were calling the shots, the only troops hitting the streets would be armed with “Know Your Pronouns” pamphlets and taxpayer-funded drag show invitations. Luckily, for now, the adults are back in charge.
