(DC Pundit) – Governor Tim Walz has officially announced he will not seek reelection in 2026, a decision that comes as his administration remains under intense scrutiny over a massive fraud scandal tied to Minnesota’s social services programs. The governor made the announcement during a press conference on Tuesday.
“The buck stops with me. I am accountable for this. Because of that accountability, I am not running for office again,” Walz said.
The controversy, which dates back to the early 2020s, exploded into the national spotlight in December after a video by YouTuber Nick Shirley went viral. In the 43-minute exposé, Shirley alleged widespread fraud at childcare centers operated by members of the Somali community, claiming funds meant for struggling families were instead siphoned off for personal use. The video may not have come from a legacy newsroom, but it lit a fire that federal investigators were already fueling.

Federal prosecutors have since charged dozens of individuals — most of them Somali — in what authorities describe as one of the largest public assistance fraud schemes in state history. According to court filings, hundreds of millions of dollars were stolen from programs like Feeding Our Future, a nonprofit created to provide meals to children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some estimates now suggest the total fraud could reach as high as $9 billion across Medicaid and other social services payments.

Walz, who served as Kamala Harris’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election, has faced growing pressure over how his administration handled oversight while the fraud unfolded. The schemes operated for years under his watch, allowing questionable nonprofits to tap into federal funds with limited resistance from state agencies.
Adding another layer to the scandal, a November report alleged that portions of the stolen money may have been sent overseas to the Somali terrorist group Al-Shabaab. While investigators continue to examine those claims, the political damage is already done.
Walz has attempted to defend his record by pointing to reforms and ongoing investigations, but the mounting revelations appear to have changed his political calculus. He had previously planned to seek a third term before reversing course in the shadow of the scandal.
President Donald Trump weighed in on Truth Social, claiming Walz, Rep. Ilhan Omar, and “others of his Somali friends” were involved in stealing “Tens of Billions of Taxpayer Dollars.” As only Trump can, the message landed like a rhetorical sledgehammer, ensuring the issue would stay front and center.

The Trump administration has since escalated federal involvement, sending about 2,000 agents to Minneapolis to enforce immigration and fraud laws. Whether that move brings long-overdue accountability or simply exposes deeper failures in government oversight remains to be seen. What is clear is that for Tim Walz, the political clock has run out.
