(DC Pundit) – When classified details about America’s most sensitive weapons stockpiles start showing up in newspaper headlines, someone in a position of trust has a very serious problem on their hands.
President Trump was reportedly furious after details about America’s weapons stockpiles, including long-range missiles, Patriot interceptors, and other critical munitions, turned up in media reports. The response from the Pentagon was swift and, by all accounts, unprecedented in scale.
Several dozen high-ranking military officials were subjected to polygraph examinations earlier this summer as part of a sweeping internal investigation into the leaks. Officials assigned to U.S. Central Command and other combatant commands were among those questioned. Sources described the scale of the operation as extraordinarily rare, while senior officials with top-secret clearances do undergo periodic polygraph exams, having this many summoned simultaneously made clear that investigators were running a targeted leak probe, not a routine check.
The New York Times added further detail, reporting that roughly 50 members of the Joint Staff were put through polygraphs in August following a wave of stories about depleted stocks of America’s most sophisticated weapons systems. Two sources indicated that none of the officials failed the questions specifically designed to identify the leaker. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine was reportedly not among those polygraphed.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell addressed the matter carefully, stating that the Department “does not comment on internal personnel or investigative matters but takes all leaks of classified national security information extremely seriously and investigates accordingly.” He added: “Securing classified information is critical to ensuring the security of the United States and of our troops deployed around the world.”
This isn’t the first time the Pentagon has confronted this problem under the current administration. Back in March 2025, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s then-chief of staff Joe Kasper sent a Pentagon-wide memo warning that polygraphs could be used “in accordance with applicable law and policy,” and that anyone identified as a leaker would be referred for criminal prosecution. When polygraphs began in the spring of 2025, a senior adviser reportedly complained to the White House and the tests were paused. Parnell dismissed the press coverage at the time as “Fake News Media’s obsession with months old workplace gossip.”
The leaks didn’t stop.
In July, Hegseth announced a joint Pentagon and Justice Department task force specifically tasked with identifying and prosecuting suspected leakers. He gave the Office of General Counsel broad authority to demand records and ordered personnel to respond within two days.
“When a leak of department information occurs today, it’s critical that we provide the Department of Justice and other partners in federal law enforcement, including the FBI, with actionable information as quickly as possible,” Hegseth said.
He also said something the legacy media conveniently buried in their coverage: “Leaked information risks lives.”
That’s the part that matters most, and it’s exactly the part that keeps getting left out.
