URGENT: CLICK TO FIGHT BACK AGAINST THE LEFT!
(DC Pundit) – If you turned on a television set at any point during the 1980s or ’90s, chances are you remember Yakov Smirnoff. The Soviet-born comedian became a breakout star with his signature catchphrase and fish-out-of-water humor about life in America versus life under the USSR. What was funny on stage, however, was a very real and sobering story, one he recently shared on the Joe Rogan Experience.
Smirnoff sat down with Rogan and described in vivid detail what life under Soviet communism actually looked like, and how he and his family managed to get out. Rogan, to his credit, was genuinely stunned.
The escape wasn’t simple. According to Smirnoff, it came down to a geopolitical transaction during the Carter administration, one involving Soviet emigration rights and American grain exports.
“[Carter] wanted to see some human rights in the Soviet Union. And the Soviet leadership was, they were starving. They didn’t have food. So, they needed food from America. So, Jimmy Carter made a deal that we’re going to give you grain, and you allow people to get out, and that’s how we were kind of exchanged for some wheat, you know,” Smirnoff explained. “That’s how we got out.”
His freedom was literally bartered for bushels of wheat.
Rogan’s reaction was visceral and relatable: “Wow. Holy s—, man … you sometimes need to be reminded how fortunate you are. You know, Americans in particular, we’re very, you know, it’s not our fault. You know, people become accustomed to where they live. … And they think this is normal, which is one of the reasons why this push towards communism amongst young people is so infuriating to me.”
Rogan didn’t stop there. He laid out exactly where communist ideology always ends up, regardless of how it’s packaged and sold to starry-eyed college students.
“They do what people do,” Rogan warned of communist officials. “What people do when they have power is they enact total control over the population so that they can maintain power, and then they live in luxury. And then you wait in line for bread, and that’s how it is all over the f—ing world. And if you step out of line, they shoot you. That’s where communism goes. So, what we need is, like, a more, a more moral and ethical version of capitalism.”
It is genuinely baffling that in a country built on individual liberty and free markets, there is a growing segment of the population — mostly young, mostly historically illiterate — that thinks communism deserves another shot. Every single person who has actually lived under it and managed to escape wants absolutely nothing to do with going back.
That should tell you everything you need to know.
