(DC Pundit) – Fresh data from the Pew Research Center has put some hard numbers behind what conservatives have been warning about for years, and the results are striking. Nearly one in ten babies born in the United States in 2023 had illegal alien parents — the highest total since 2010, the second year of the Obama administration.
Of the 3.6 million babies born in the U.S. that year, approximately 320,000 were so-called “anchor babies” who would not qualify for birthright citizenship if President Donald Trump’s executive order is ultimately upheld by the Supreme Court. Drilling further into the data, about 260,000 of those babies would have been directly affected by Trump’s order. Roughly 245,000 were born to mothers who were illegal aliens with fathers who were neither citizens nor lawful permanent residents, while about 15,000 were born to mothers with temporary legal status in similar circumstances.
The Heritage Foundation’s Brandy Perez Carbaugh spelled out exactly what those numbers mean for American taxpayers. “Under the current erroneous birthright citizenship interpretation, these children automatically become citizens and unlock food stamps, welfare, specialized schooling for English education, and eventually college aid,” she told the New York Post. She added, “High volumes of illegal and temporary aliens are having children in the US because they are exploiting the decades-old erroneous interpretation that such children are US citizens.”
The legal battle over birthright citizenship is now before the Supreme Court in Trump v. Barbara, which challenges Trump’s executive order on the matter. The 14th Amendment, adopted in 1868 following the Civil War to guarantee citizenship rights to formerly enslaved people, contains the phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” — language the Department of Justice argues was never intended to extend citizenship to children of those illegally present in the country.
The Supreme Court is expected to issue its ruling in late June or early July. For millions of Americans watching their tax dollars stretch thinner every year, that ruling cannot come soon enough.
