URGENT: CLICK TO FIGHT BACK AGAINST THE LEFT!
(DC Pundit) – You’d think that with President Trump back in the White House and immigration enforcement finally being taken seriously, Republican lawmakers would be lining up behind the agenda their voters demanded. You’d think that.
So it’s more than a little troubling that over 20 Republican lawmakers have signed onto a piece of legislation that critics say is amnesty dressed up in a blazer and given a friendlier name.
The so-called “Dignity Act” is being sold as a bipartisan “compromise” on immigration. What it actually does, according to critics, is grant legal status, work permits, and long-term protections to millions of illegal aliens already living in the United States. Compromise. Sure.
Among the Republicans identified as supporting or co-sponsoring the bill are Maria Elvira Salazar, David Valadao, Dan Newhouse, Young Kim, Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike Lawler, Jen Kiggans, Tony Gonzales, Monica De La Cruz, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Anthony D’Esposito, Nick LaLota, Marc Molinaro, Andrew Garbarino, Juan Ciscomani, Don Bacon, John Duarte, Mike Garcia, and Ken Calvert.
Congressman Brandon Gill has emerged as the loudest voice of opposition, and he didn’t mince words. “It’s in a foreign language for added insult,” Gill said of the bill’s Spanish title. “The clearest way for Republicans to tell our voters we viscerally hate them is passing the ‘Dignity Act’ or any other amnesty bill.”
Hard to argue with that logic.
Supporters of the legislation claim it includes penalties, restitution requirements, and work mandates for those seeking legal status, along with border security provisions. But conservatives have heard that song before.
With immigration remaining the defining issue for Republican voters, these lawmakers may soon discover that their constituents have very long memories.
