(DC Pundit) – A 41-year-old Kentucky woman decided the most effective way to draw attention to her personal grievances was to spray-paint the National World War II Memorial on the National Mall, dump soap into its fountains, livestream the entire thing, and then ask her social media followers to edit the footage and spread it across the internet.
This is the world we live in now.
Melissa L. Farris, who goes by Melissa Lovewell on Facebook, walked up to the Atlantic Pavilion on Thursday afternoon, shook her spray cans, and tagged the granite with the message “Clean hands dirty $” in bright paint. She poured soap into the fountain until it frothed over with bubbles. And she recorded every moment of it for public consumption.
“It was me. I’m doing it. I’m on camera,” she declared during the livestream, adding that she would wait to be arrested for spraying “our veterans’ fountain.”
She then posted again afterward, bragging that she had been “allowed to deface Federal f—ing property, and nobody batted an eye.”

In a subsequent Facebook video, Farris asked viewers to edit her footage, highlight the best parts, and “make me look fancy, get it all over the internet.” She also expressed apparent amazement that she had not been immediately arrested at the scene. According to the federal criminal complaint, Farris had announced beforehand that she understood the choices she was making and intended to use the incident to force a purported “whistleblower case” into court.
To be clear about what she vandalized: the National World War II Memorial is a sacred site dedicated to the more than 400,000 Americans who died and the 16 million who served in the Second World War. Farris turned it into her personal stage.

Investigators say a Park Ranger later encountered several people watching as a woman recorded herself at the vandalized pavilion. The woman allegedly fled after noticing the ranger. Officers later identified her through a previous arrest just days earlier for unlawfully camping on federal property near the memorial.
The story did not end there. With federal authorities searching for her, Farris appeared outside the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia, on Friday, crying during another Facebook Live broadcast. She apologized for the vandalism, claimed she has autism and ADHD, and made a series of unverified and increasingly alarming claims about being followed by military aircraft and having an animal killed in front of her. No evidence supporting those claims was presented.
“I know I made a lot of people mad, and I’m sorry. I was just trying to get help for myself,” she said. She then added: “Will somebody please check on me in jail? I have autism, ADHD, and I don’t eat meat. I’m afraid they’re gonna hurt me for what I did, and all I was trying to do was help myself.”

She livestreamed her surrender. Because of course she did.
“It’s me. I’m going to turn myself in,” she told viewers. “I didn’t want to go to jail.”
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced that Farris has been charged with willfully injuring or committing depredation against federal property and destruction of a veterans’ memorial. She was detained following her initial appearance at the Alexandria courthouse.
The men and women honored at that memorial stormed beaches, survived prisoner of war camps, and gave their lives so that Americans could live freely. One of those Americans used that freedom to spray-paint their monument and post it on Facebook for likes.
