(DC Pundit) – Newly unsealed police bodycam footage from a Virginia elementary school offers a raw look at the chaos after a 6-year-old shot his teacher, and it is as disturbing as it sounds.
In January 2023, Richneck Elementary School teacher Abby Zwerner was shot by one of her students and spent two weeks in the hospital. The Newport News Commonwealth’s prosecutor later decided the boy would not face charges.
The family has said the child suffers from “acute disability and was under a care plan at the school that included his mother or father attending school with him and accompanying him to class every day.” So how does a child under that kind of plan end up in a classroom with a gun?
The footage shows an elderly teacher holding the boy restrained on her lap when officers arrived. He wasn’t scared. He was combative.
“Ya’ll wanna fckin piece of me, bitch!” he shouted as officers entered. “Fck you bitches!” After the teacher said she had warned the assistant principal of a threat earlier, he yelled, “That n*gga retired last year!”
“I called 911,” the teacher told police. The boy kept at it: “F*ck you, bitch!” She calmly checked his hands and asked, “When you shot the gun, did anything hurt you?”
“I stole that from my mom!” he shouted. “I shot my teacher!” When an officer asked, “What’s your name?” he fired back: “If you wanna piece of me, come get it, bitch!”

Here’s what the gun control crowd would rather skip. This wasn’t a failure of the Second Amendment. It was a failure of an adult. In April 2023, the boy’s mother, Deja Taylor, was charged with “felony child neglect and a misdemeanor for leaving a firearm that could endanger a child,” WTKR reported. Those charges fall under laws already on the books, which tells you the problem wasn’t a shortage of rules. It was someone ignoring them.
Americans have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and that right comes with a serious duty. Locking up a firearm, especially with a young child in the house, is common sense, and responsible owners already know it.
Yet every time a tragedy like this hits the news, the left rushes to blame guns and the millions of law-abiding owners who did nothing wrong. Stripping rights from the responsible many because of one negligent adult fixes nothing. Accountability does. Zwerner and her colleagues were left to handle the fallout, and that blame belongs with the adults who failed, not the freedoms of everyone else.
