(DC Pundit) – If you needed any more evidence that California’s policies are creating problems well beyond its own borders, here it is, rolling down the highway at 70 miles per hour in an 80,000-pound rig.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection ran a targeted operation in the Yuma Sector between Aug. 10 and Aug. 14, and when the dust settled, agents had arrested 95 illegal alien truck drivers. Every single one of them was carrying a state-issued commercial driver’s license. Seventy-six of those licenses, that’s 80% for anyone keeping score, were issued by California. Six more came from New York, with the remainder spread across a handful of other states.
The Department of Homeland Security made sure to highlight that California figure, announcing it would continue working to get illegal truckers off American roads. Acting Chief Patrol Agent Dustin Caudle said the operation was aimed at protecting the public from “unlicensed or untrained drivers” as well as from smuggling networks operating in the region.

And the haul didn’t stop at truck drivers. Agents also broke up two separate human smuggling events, taking four smugglers and 17 smuggled migrants into custody. They seized 74 pounds of methamphetamine and 169 pounds of marijuana. In total, 143 suspects from 18 countries were arrested across the broader operation.
Let that sink in. One operation. One sector. Five days. One hundred and forty-three arrests spanning nearly twenty countries.
Commercial driver’s licenses are supposed to certify that the holder has passed rigorous federal and state testing for operating heavy trucks. What they don’t certify, particularly when issued by states like California, is whether the holder is legally present in the United States. Handing out professional credentials without verifying legal status isn’t compassion, it’s negligence.
DHS has not yet disclosed how many of the 95 drivers will face prosecution, deportation, or both. Their individual criminal histories were also not included in the initial public accounting, which means the full picture could look considerably worse once those records surface.
President Trump has floated a straightforward solution to the illegal trucker problem, replace them with American veterans who have served this country and deserve a shot at good-paying jobs in the transportation industry. It’s the kind of common-sense proposal that puts Americans first, which is precisely why the left can’t stand it.
Meanwhile, California will presumably keep doing what California does: issuing licenses, asking no inconvenient questions, and letting the rest of us deal with the fallout.
