(DC Pundit) – New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has been called a terrorist-supporting communist who despises America by many observers. His defenders push back on that description, but the man keeps making their job harder by the day.
Earlier this month, Mamdani signed an “emergency” order banning large public gatherings in New York City during the World Cup — a soccer tournament the United States is co-hosting this summer alongside Canada and Mexico. If that arrangement already feels like an affront to American exceptionalism, wait until you hear what Mamdani did next.
New York City had been planning a public ball drop in Times Square on the evening of July 3, a patriotic celebration timed to the nation’s 250th birthday. Thanks to Mamdani’s order, that event has been gutted and downgraded to a “limited, ticketed in-person experience” inside the One Times Square building. At least 25 other major events are now at risk of cancellation — all so the city can conserve resources for a soccer tournament that, it should be noted, isn’t even being played in New York City. The World Cup games are being held at MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, New Jersey, nearly 10 miles from Times Square. So Mamdani is canceling Fourth of July celebrations in New York for games being played in New Jersey.
The mayor insists this is about resource management. A lot of New Yorkers aren’t buying it, and frankly, neither should you.
As if all of that weren’t enough, Mamdani has also apparently put a curse on the New York Mets. The mayor visited Citi Field on April 9 and posed for selfies with team mascots Mr. and Mrs. Met. The Mets then proceeded to lose 11 straight games. The team finally snapped the losing streak this week, but even that victory came at a cost, star shortstop Francisco Lindor, a Gold Glove-caliber player and one of the team’s most reliable hitters, left the game in the fourth inning with a calf injury and did not return.
The man has been mayor for a matter of months and he’s already canceled July 4th and cursed a baseball team. New Yorkers voted for this. The rest of America watches in disbelief.
