(DC Pundit) – Residents in the Austin, Texas area were forced to shelter in place last weekend, as reports of multiple shootings flooded in across the region. By the time the dust settled, the Austin Police Department had identified at least three suspects connected to as many as 12 shootings. Two of those shootings targeted fire stations in South Austin. At least four people were reported injured.
This is the kind of chaos that President Trump has been warning about for years. And sure enough, the details that emerged in court made the left’s open border obsession look even more reckless than usual.
Police announced that 17-year-old Cristian Mondragon has been charged with six felonies, with additional charges still possible. Those charges include two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, two counts of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, theft of firearms, and evading arrest with a motor vehicle. The two remaining suspects are minors and will be processed through the juvenile system.
Here’s where things get particularly interesting. While in court, prosecutors noted that Mondragon is not a U.S. citizen and currently has an ICE hold on him.
Criminal Defense and Immigration Attorney Robert Jimenez acknowledged the significance, stating, “The ICE detainer does add an extra component to his process.” Prosecutors argued Mondragon poses a clear danger to the community and could potentially be deported if released. The judge agreed, ordering him held without bond on the aggravated assault charges.
Jimenez did clarify that the detainer doesn’t immediately transfer jurisdiction to federal authorities, explaining, “That would only kick in once he is no longer authorized to be held by state custody.”
So to summarize: an individual who had no legal right to be in this country allegedly participated in a shooting rampage that terrorized an entire Texas city, injured multiple people, and targeted fire stations. And yet, we’re still having a national debate about whether immigration enforcement is too aggressive.
This is precisely the scenario conservatives have been raising red flags about for years while being dismissed, called xenophobic, and lectured about compassion. The people of Austin weren’t asking philosophical questions about border policy when they were sheltering in place last weekend. They were just trying to stay alive.
Every Democrat politician who has worked to obstruct ICE, defund enforcement, or create sanctuary policies owns a piece of stories like this one. Every single one of them.
