URGENT: CLICK TO FIGHT BACK AGAINST THE LEFT!
(DC Pundit) – Only in New York City, where a self-described socialist just won the mayoralty, would a senior city official think it was perfectly acceptable to schedule a cozy sit-down with the Iranian regime’s ambassador to the United Nations without telling anyone in Washington about it.
Commissioner Ana María Archila, head of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Office for International Affairs, had a meeting locked in for July 7 at 11 a.m. at 2 United Nations Plaza with Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran’s representative to the UN. Two other senior officials from the office were also slated to attend, according to calendar invitation screenshots reviewed by City Journal and confirmed by multiple sources, including a State Department official.
The meeting never happened, not because anyone in the Mamdani administration had second thoughts, but because President Trump’s State Department found out about it, stepped in, and met with the administration to “clarify acceptable conduct.”
The predictable damage-control statement from Archila’s office followed shortly after: “This meeting did not and will not take place.” Crisis managed. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Except there is quite a lot to see here.
Mamdani, the DSA-backed Marxist who somehow became the mayor of the largest city in the United States, has made it a priority to fill key positions with ideological allies rather than qualified professionals. Archila is a perfect example. A longtime activist and former co-director of the Working Families Party with precisely zero diplomatic experience, she was handed one of the most sensitive international-facing roles in city government as a political reward. The results speak for themselves.
And it gets worse. Archila’s office had already been caught circulating an internal directive instructing staff to prioritize diplomatic engagement with foreign officials who are “in political alignment/leftist.” This isn’t city business. This is rogue ideological foreign policy being conducted on the taxpayer’s dime, by people who have no business conducting any foreign policy whatsoever.
Iran is not a country that deserves the legitimacy of an official meeting with American municipal officials. It is a designated state sponsor of terrorism. Its leaders have American blood on their hands. The regime funds Hezbollah, Hamas, and a long list of terrorist proxies that have killed Americans and destabilized the Middle East for decades. The notion that a city commissioner would attempt to dignify that regime with an official sit-down, without informing the mayor, without notifying the State Department, without so much as a phone call to Washington, is not just reckless. It is jaw-dropping.
Thank goodness Trump’s State Department was paying attention. In a functioning government, local officials do not get to freelance their own foreign policy with America’s enemies. That’s not how sovereignty works. That’s not how national security works. And it is absolutely not how any of this should work.
New York City voters put a socialist in charge. This is what that looks like.
