(DC Pundit) – Author Malcolm Gladwell stopped by “Morning Joe” on MS NOW and floated a theory that would make the Founding Fathers do a double take: that the Second Amendment was really written about slave patrols.
Gladwell is best known for bestsellers like “The Tipping Point” and “Outliers,” so he’s no stranger to a bold thesis. But this one takes a right enshrined in the Bill of Rights and recasts it as something else entirely. The amendment guarantees the right of the people to keep and bear arms, and the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed it as an individual right, most notably in its 2008 Heller decision and again in the 2022 Bruen ruling.
That is exactly what seems to have bothered him. Gladwell spent much of the segment complaining about the high court, which he says has been “a significant impediment” in the left’s pursuit of gun control. In other words, the problem isn’t the history. The problem is that the justices keep reading the Constitution the way it’s written.

The slave patrol argument isn’t new. A handful of academics have pushed versions of it for years, though plenty of historians and legal scholars reject it. Still, floating a contested theory is one thing. Doing it on national television without anyone questioning it is another.
And that’s the part that really stands out. The hosts let Gladwell go on without interrupting or correcting him. No follow-up question, no raised eyebrow, not even a polite “are you sure about that?” Funny how the fact-checking instincts only seem to switch on when the guest is wearing a red hat.
