(DC Pundit) – Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation as Director of National Intelligence to be with her husband, Abraham, who has been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.
Gabbard personally notified President Trump of her decision during a meeting in the Oval Office on Friday. Her last day at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence is expected to be June 30.
In her resignation letter, Gabbard wrote plainly and from the heart. “Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026. My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.”
She noted that Abraham “faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months,” and made clear that her place right now is beside him. “At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle,” she wrote.

Gabbard has had a fascinating and genuinely impressive career. A former Democrat congresswoman from Hawaii who served multiple terms, she made a dramatic political evolution over the years, ultimately aligning herself with President Trump’s America First movement. Trump tapped her to lead the intelligence community, a role she took on with the same directness and backbone she brought to everything else in her career. She was confirmed by the Senate and quickly became one of the more prominent and outspoken members of the administration.
Her departure leaves a significant vacancy at one of the most critical positions in the federal government, and President Trump will need to move swiftly to identify a capable successor.
