(DC Pundit) – A brutal killing on Chicago’s South Side has left a 50-year-old man dead, with authorities saying that a dispute over gender and appearance preceded the savage attack.
Kelly Day, 32, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Larry Young, who was stabbed 13 times last Wednesday near a gas station in the 1400 block of East 87th Street.
The attack was so violent that the knife’s blade reportedly broke off in Young’s skull. It’s a horrifying detail in an already disturbing case, and one that underscores the deadly consequences of an encounter that escalated into murder.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the events leading up to the killing reportedly began earlier in the day at a McDonald’s restaurant. Day allegedly encountered a separate group of people in the restaurant’s bathroom, where individuals reportedly mocked Day, a biological man, for using the women’s restroom.
Later, Young was walking along 87th Street when he reportedly made a comment about Day’s appearance and gender. What happened next turned a street-level confrontation into a fatal attack.
According to the reported account, Day became enraged and followed Young across the street toward a nearby gas station. After a brief altercation, Day allegedly stood over Young and repeatedly stabbed him in the skull.
Young’s death is a grim reminder of how quickly a confrontation can spiral into catastrophic violence. Regardless of the disagreement that preceded it, no verbal insult or argument can justify taking another person’s life.
Police said Day’s wife and stepson witnessed the fatal stabbing, adding another disturbing dimension to an already tragic incident.
During a Saturday hearing at Central Bond Court, Judge John Hock approved a request to keep Day, who is from Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood, in custody pending trial. The brutality of the alleged attack was among the factors considered in the decision.
Day now faces a first-degree murder charge as the case proceeds through the criminal justice system.
A disagreement over appearance and gender should never end with a man losing his life. We believe individuals struggling with gender identity need access to proper mental health care and compassionate, professional treatment—not unquestioning encouragement, hormone blockers, or irreversible surgeries, but genuine help that addresses their underlying struggles.
