(DC Pundit) – Coco Gauff has a problem, and it isn’t her forehand.
The 22-year-old tennis phenom says life has been difficult for her as a Black woman in the United States. She made the comments back in January at the Australian Open, where, presumably, the struggle was real between the courtside amenities and the sponsor lounges.
Now, nobody gets to tell Gauff what her own experience has been. But it takes a special kind of tone-deafness to make that case while sitting atop the women’s sports money mountain. According to reports, Coco is the highest-paid female athlete in the world. She made over $33 million last year, including $8 million in on-court money and $25 million in endorsements.
Let that sink in. Twenty-five million dollars came from companies lining up to hand her checks for wearing their gear and smiling at cameras. If that’s oppression, most Americans would like to sign up for the program.
Her résumé is no accident either. She won the US Open as a teenager and the French Open after that. She is a genuinely great athlete who earned every dollar on the court. That’s exactly what makes the complaint so hard to square. Here is a young woman living proof that opportunity in America is alive and well, telling the world how hard it is out there.

You’d think someone with her platform and her bank balance would have bigger fish to fry. If she wants to talk about what’s tearing the country apart, she could start by condemning the political violence from the left that’s become a regular feature of American protests. That seems like a conversation worth having with all those cameras pointed her way.
Instead, we get yet another helping of celebrity grievance, served with a side of courtside privilege. The hardship narrative went stale a long time ago, and this installment doesn’t change that.
