(DC Pundit) – Newt Gingrich isn’t exactly known for thinking small. The former House Speaker who engineered the Republican Revolution of 1994, one of the most stunning political wave elections in modern American history, is back with a blueprint he believes could deliver an equally historic result for Republicans in the 2026 midterms. And he’s got some very specific ideas about what it’s going to take.
Gingrich laid out his six-point strategy during a recent appearance on the “John Solomon Reports” podcast, arriving at a moment of considerable momentum for the GOP. Trump-endorsed candidates had just delivered a string of dominant primary victories across six states on Tuesday night, with more than 30 backed candidates either winning outright or advancing to runoff elections, including several insurgent victories over entrenched establishment Republicans. The RINO hunting season, as we’ve covered extensively, remains very much open.
The former speaker’s central argument is straightforward: Republicans are sitting on a golden opportunity, but they can squander it if they lose focus on the issues that matter most to everyday Americans.
And according to Gingrich, issue number costs you a small fortune every time you fill up your tank.
“I think that the political skills and the effectiveness of his organization put him in a pretty good position … to win this fall in a historic way,” Gingrich said of President Trump. “In my mind, the key is the price of gasoline.”
He’s not wrong. National average gas prices have climbed to roughly $4.56 per gallon, up more than 50 cents in a single month, largely driven by tensions surrounding the U.S. conflict with Iran. Gingrich was blunt about what the number on that pump means politically. “If gasoline is below $4 and clearly coming down by Labor Day, the Republicans may historically win one of the biggest off-year elections in history,” he said.
Beyond energy, Gingrich urged the White House to stay locked in on the full spectrum of affordability issues crushing middle-class families: housing costs, healthcare expenses, and the general financial squeeze that didn’t exactly improve under four years of Democrat governance. His argument is that increasing American oil production and stabilizing global energy markets accomplishes two things simultaneously: it relieves financial pressure on American families and weakens adversaries overseas. “If the oil starts flowing, the price comes down, the rest of the world will relax,” Gingrich said. “The American people will relax.”
On the foreign policy front, Gingrich took a notably hawkish position regarding Iran and control of the Persian Gulf. “We need to ask Admiral Cooper to take personal charge,” he said, arguing that America should “wage a battle of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.” He added, “Because if we are ferocious enough and aggressive enough, and we break them in the strait and the gulf, the world will realize that we’re genuinely serious.”
That’s one perspective, and we’ll respectfully push back on it. With President Trump actively working toward a peace deal with Iran and American families still feeling the financial weight of ongoing conflict, the last thing this country needs is to dig deeper into another prolonged military engagement in the Middle East. We’ve seen that movie before, and it doesn’t end well. Strength through deterrence is one thing. Actively “waging battle” in the Persian Gulf is quite another. If there’s a diplomatic path that protects American interests, keeps the Strait of Hormuz open, and brings our men and women home, or better yet, keeps them from having to go in the first place, that’s the option worth pursuing. Not every problem requires an American military solution, and conservatives who genuinely believe in putting America First should be just as skeptical of unnecessary foreign entanglements as they are of wasteful government spending.
Gingrich also encouraged Republicans to do a better job promoting the work of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Make America Healthy Again movement, pointing specifically to removing artificial food dyes linked to cancer and updated CDC guidance on hepatitis B vaccines for newborns as concrete wins that resonate with voters across the political spectrum.
Perhaps most importantly, Gingrich urged Republicans to keep the spotlight burning hot on the Democrats’ increasingly unhinged agenda. Recent Democrat proposals have included restructuring the Supreme Court and abolishing the Electoral College, two ideas that should terrify any American who values constitutional governance. “Trump needs to be talking about the ‘Do Dangerous Things Democrat Congressmen,'” Gingrich said. “Point out [that if] these people get a majority, they will do nothing for two years. They will guarantee gridlock for America.”
Meanwhile, former Vice President Kamala Harris, yes she’s still out there, has reportedly been urging Democrats to hold a “no bad idea brainstorm” session to figure out how to reclaim power. Court packing and Electoral College elimination apparently made the list. So the Democrats’ answer to losing is to propose dismantling the very foundations of American democracy. Bold strategy.
Gingrich closed with a call for Republicans to pair their record of accomplishment with a forward-looking vision. “You start by saying we have gotten a lot done, then you go to, and if we have a majority next year, here’s what we will do,” he said. “I think we drive those themes within a framework of acceptable gas prices. We will win an extraordinary election this fall.”
