(DC Pundit) – Democrats keep insisting this midterm campaign is all about the cost of living. Then somebody asks them a direct question.
On Sunday, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) went on NBC’s “Meet the Press” and conceded that if Democrats win back control of Congress, impeaching President Trump is possible. Host Kristen Welker didn’t dance around it.
Welker said, “Let me ask you about a big debate right now inside the Democratic party. If Democrats do win back control of Congress, it’s about impeachment. You, of course, led the first impeachment of President Trump back in 2019. As we sit here today, Senator, do you believe that President Trump has committed impeachable offenses?”
Schiff said, “I feel the same way I did early in the Russia investigation, which is you don’t prejudge the outcome before you even do the oversight. And so what I’m suggesting that we do is, first of all, focus on exactly what we’re campaigning on. And that is—our primary focus needs to be on bringing costs down. So our oversight should focus on that. It should focus on the corruption that is driving costs up. If that corruption leads in the direction of impeachment, it will lead wherever it leads. But we should put our overriding emphasis not on impeachment, but on bringing the cost down for the American people, on our affirmative agenda, on our oversight agenda, yes, our investigative agenda. But it should be with an eye to improving the quality of life for the American people.”
Notice what’s missing: the word “no.” Schiff chaired the House Intelligence Committee and led the 2019 inquiry that ended with Trump’s impeachment on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate acquitted him in 2020, and again in 2021 after a second impeachment. That’s two for two.
Then there’s the Russia investigation Schiff invoked as his guide. It ended with special counsel Robert Mueller not establishing a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia. In 2023, the House voted to censure Schiff, with Republicans citing his statements about that probe. Trump has been calling him “Shifty Schiff” ever since.
So when the man who spent years promising bombshells says he won’t “prejudge the outcome” of an investigation he hasn’t started, voters can be forgiven for raising an eyebrow. The pitch is lower costs, delivered by committees with subpoena power and an open-ended mandate to chase “corruption” wherever it leads. Republicans have seen that movie, and it doesn’t end with cheaper eggs.
