(DC Pundit) – Senate Majority Leader John Thune is signaling he wants another shot at leading Senate Republicans after the party just got steamrolled in the 2026 midterms. This is the same John Thune who spent two years refusing to push through the SAVE America Act, the election integrity measure that would have required proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote. President Trump made it a top priority. Thune sat on it.
Democrats flipped at least seven Republican Senate seats, took the House, and grabbed multiple governorships. Starting in January, the left will control both chambers of Congress. Conservatives warned for months that leaving elections wide open invited exactly this kind of result. Thune’s answer was to protect the filibuster instead of securing the ballot box.
Late Tuesday night, after the damage was done, Thune took to social media and claimed Senate Republicans had put up a “strong record of accomplishment” on safer streets, tax cuts, border security, and judicial confirmations. Mike Cernovich offered one of the clearer responses to that self-congratulation, pointing out the obvious: the majority leader had the tools and refused to use them.
Abolish the filibuster, pass the SAVE Act. End blue slips. Confirm judges. Go into recess, Trump makes appointments. You sabotaged the country. You are a demon inside a human skin suit.

Let’s be honest. When Republicans held the White House and both chambers, the most basic election security bill still could not clear the Senate. Now the same leader who blocked it wants to keep the job while Democrats prepare to undo everything. Rank-and-file conservatives are not buying the victory lap. They watched the SAVE America Act die on Thune’s watch and then watched red states turn blue on Election Night.

The man who failed to lock down the process is now asking for another term as the face of Senate Republicans. The base has already delivered its verdict. We want Thune gone.
