(DC Pundit) – War Secretary Pete Hegseth is now in the crosshairs of his own party. After a midterm loss widely blamed on the Iran war, some Republicans led by Rep. Thomas Massie are preparing an impeachment vote before the next Congress is even seated.
Massie previously introduced articles of impeachment against Hegseth back in September. Now he is back at it. CNN is reporting that some GOPers expect the latest resolution to pass in the House as Republican lawmakers turn on the defense secretary.
President Trump is having none of it. On Tuesday he told reporters he is not considering firing Hegseth. “No, I think he’s doing a very good job,” Trump said. Asked whether Hegseth should replace Marsha Blackburn in the Senate after her successful run for Governor in Tennessee, Trump repeated, “I think he’s doing a very good job.” He added, “I actually think he’d be very popular if he did that, but I haven’t heard that at all.”

CNN reported on Wednesday, “House Republicans are expected to vote to directly repudiate the defense secretary in a matter of days. Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, the famously anti-Trump GOP lawmaker, told CNN he plans to trigger a vote to impeach Hegseth when Congress returns next week — and multiple GOP sources said they expect it to pass.”
Massie did not stop there. He rebuked Trump for planning to continue the war against Iran, telling CNN, “You don’t screw up this badly an election with just one issue.” Then came the real tell: “It was completely avoidable if they’d just broken out of the cultish following of Donald Trump.”
On X, Massie made his position even clearer: “There is one contingency in which I won’t reintroduce the articles of impeachment: Hegseth resigns.”

This is the same Thomas Massie who has made a career out of opposing Trump at nearly every turn. Now, with Republicans nursing midterm wounds, he sees an opening to take down one of the president’s key appointees. Democrats, of course, are watching with open arms. They have already marked Hegseth as one of their top targets when the Democratic-controlled House and Senate take power in January.
Internal division after an election loss is nothing new in Washington. But using that moment to impeach a sitting War Secretary while the commander-in-chief is still defending him is a special kind of political self-sabotage. Trump has made his view known. Hegseth, for now, still has the president’s confidence. Whether that is enough to stop Massie and his allies remains to be seen.
