(DC Pundit) – A 32-year-old Venezuelan illegal alien who was previously teaching a classroom full of children in an Illinois school has been arrested by ICE for allegedly serving as the getaway driver for two Tren de Aragua gang members following a mass shooting in Chicago that left three people dead and five others wounded.
Giovanna Mercedes Moreno Occhipinti, a Venezuelan national who also holds dual Italian citizenship, entered the United States in October 2021 through the Visa Waiver Program and simply never left. She overstayed her visa and apparently had no trouble building a life here, including landing a teaching job in the Chicago suburb of Elgin, while federal immigration authorities remained in the dark.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, on December 2, 2024, Occhipinti drove two alleged Tren de Aragua gang members, Ricardo Granadillo Padilla and Edward Martinez Cermeno, to a house party in Chicago’s Gage Park neighborhood. The two opened fire on the crowd. Three people were killed. Five more were wounded. Federal authorities say Occhipinti then helped the shooters flee the scene.

Chicago Police arrested her just three days later, on December 5, 2024, after finding multiple weapons in her vehicle. And here is where the story takes a turn that should make every law-abiding American’s blood boil. Because Chicago and Illinois operate as militant sanctuary jurisdictions, Occhipinti was released without ICE ever being notified, despite her direct connection to a triple homicide. No call. No alert. Nothing.

The two shooters were eventually deported. One had even been released from ICE custody earlier by a federal judge due to prosecutorial issues. Apparently, keeping a Tren de Aragua gang member behind bars was too much to ask. Meanwhile, Occhipinti walked free and went right back to teaching children in Elgin until Homeland Security agents finally tracked her down months later.
She was taken into ICE custody on May 13, 2026, and is currently being held at the Grayson County Detention Center in Leitchfield, Kentucky, pending removal from the country.
In a final insult to the families of the three people killed that December night, Illinois officials have flat-out refused to disclose to DHS which school employed her. The state that shielded her from deportation is now shielding the institution that put her in front of kids. Sanctuary policies don’t just protect criminals, they protect the systems that enable them.
