(DC Pundit) – President Donald Trump is not waiting until later in his second term to start thinking about who carries the America First torch next, and according to a Washington Post report, he has already made his preference crystal clear behind closed doors.
During a private Oval Office meeting with donors roughly two weeks ago, Trump reportedly told the room exactly where he stands on the 2028 presidential race. “At the end of the day, we need to elect JD,” Trump said, according to two anonymous sources familiar with the conversation. For anyone who has been paying attention to Trump’s relationship with Vice President JD Vance, this will come as no surprise.
The Post’s report also reveals that Trump has been privately comparing Vance with Secretary of State Marco Rubio in conversations about the GOP’s future. One White House official told the outlet that Trump raised the topic of potential successors during a recent Marine One flight, questioning staff members about both men. However, one adviser familiar with Trump’s thinking told the Post that the president has privately concluded Vance is the future of the Republican Party, even if a formal endorsement is still premature given the timeline.
Trump has not been shy about his enthusiasm for a Vance-led ticket publicly either. In June, he declared that a Vance-Rubio presidential ticket would be “very unbeatable” — a comment that immediately fueled speculation about the shape of post-Trump Republican politics. Rubio, for his part, has been equally direct about where his loyalties would lie.
“I’m going to finish the job for this president,” Rubio said earlier this year. “JD is a very good friend of mine. If JD runs for president, I think he’d be a phenomenal candidate. I’ll be the first person to sign up and support him.”
That kind of public deference from a fellow heavyweight speaks volumes about the current dynamic within the Republican Party’s upper ranks. There is no jockeying, no back-stabbing, no anonymous sniping at colleagues through friendly reporters. The team is unified, and Trump appears to be doing everything he can to keep it that way by telegraphing his preference early.
Early polling backs up the political logic behind Trump’s thinking. Surveys conducted this summer showed Vance leading the field of potential 2028 GOP presidential contenders, with Rubio also posting competitive numbers. The base is clearly ready for a Vance candidacy, and with Trump’s blessing likely to formalize at some point, the Republican primary could shape up to be far less chaotic than the ones of recent memory.
The 2028 race is still many months away, but in the world of presidential politics, laying groundwork early is everything. And right now, JD Vance has the most important endorsement in American politics quietly working in his corner.
