(DC Pundit) – Immigration enforcement is in full force, and California’s sanctuary crowd is throwing every obstacle it can in the way. On Tuesday, ICE agents showed up at the Monterey County Jail in Salinas for a targeted operation aimed at three illegal aliens with prior arrests for DUI, drug offenses, and providing false identification. Their names: Eduardo Castro-Lopez (also known as Jordan Eduardo Yac), Jose Luis Quinones (also known as Jose Manuel Garcia), and Angelina Ramirez-Sepulveda.
What should have been a routine handoff turned into a three-hour lockdown and a sidewalk circus. Instead of cooperating, the jail locked down, suspended new bookings and inmate releases, and watched as roughly 50 protesters, lawyers, legal observers, and politicians gathered outside. ICE left empty-handed.
An ICE spokesperson told Border Hawk that “what should have been a simple, routine operation quickly went sideways.” Agents waited behind yellow caution tape while the crowd grew. Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo was on scene filming the protest. Supervisor Wendy Root Askew got into a tense exchange with an ICE agent, telling him she had spoken with the sheriff and that “they will not be releasing anyone who is at risk today.”
The agent pushed back: “OK, so to be clear: Because we are here, the folks that are in there that would otherwise be legally allowed out there, Fourth Amendment rights are being violated by the sheriff to keep them in there? Is that what I’m hearing from you?” Askew’s reply was pure sanctuary logic: “They will not be released in a location where ICE is present.”
Around 5:40 p.m. the sheriff’s office announced the lockdown “out of an abundance of caution to ensure everybody’s safety.” ICE agents departed about 6:30 p.m. Normal operations resumed less than two hours later. Officials later claimed scheduled releases were not affected overall.

ICE saw it differently. Two of the three targets were reportedly released, and the agency accused the jail of “harboring” them, stating that “criminals are being protected in sanctuary cities and states, and a law enforcement facility is siding with CRIMINALS instead of cooperating with federal law enforcement.” Custody records the next day confirmed Castro-Lopez had been released and Quinones was no longer listed, while Ramirez-Sepulveda remained.

This is what “sanctuary” looks like in practice: local officials choosing criminal illegal aliens over federal law and public safety. President Trump’s administration is not playing these games anymore. When ICE shows up to remove people already arrested for serious offenses, the proper response is cooperation, not a lockdown and a protest. Monterey County just showed the country which side it’s on.
