(DC Pundit) – A Missouri mother has pleaded guilty to first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death after she placed her eight-week-old daughter, Za’Riah Mae Thomas, inside a kitchen oven, an act so incomprehensibly monstrous it barely registers as something that could happen in the real world.
Mariah K. Thomas, 28, of Kansas City, was originally facing a first-degree murder charge, but prosecutors dropped that count as part of a plea agreement. Jackson County Circuit Judge Sarah A. Castle sentenced Thomas to 13 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections with no possibility of probation.
Kansas City police were dispatched to a home on February 9, 2024, following a report of an infant in distress. A relative who arrived at the residence said he smelled smoke and located the baby in her crib. When he confronted Thomas about what happened, she told him she thought she had placed the baby in the crib but had put her in the oven instead. Officers found Za’Riah unresponsive, suffering from severe burn injuries. Firefighters pronounced her dead at the scene.

Thomas has remained in Jackson County jail since her arrest. She will receive credit for time already served in pre-trial detention, meaning she will likely serve approximately 11 more years behind bars.
Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker released a statement following sentencing: “Our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life.” Baker added, “We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to these awful circumstances.”
Thomas had been scheduled to stand trial on the murder charge in October. The plea deal spared the courts that process, though it also spared Thomas from the far harsher outcome a murder conviction could have brought. Za’Riah was just eight weeks old. She never had a chance.
