(DC Pundit) – James Talarico, the far-left Presbyterian minister running as the Democratic Senate candidate in Texas, has a lot of opinions about Christianity. Most of them would be unrecognizable to anyone who has actually read the Bible, but one of them could create some very real legal headaches.
In a June 2023 appearance on Texas Impact’s “Weekly Witness” show, Talarico was asked how his faith guides his policy principles. His answer was illuminating, and not in the way he intended.
“I mean, my faith is why I’m in politics,” Talarico said, before proceeding to catalogue his church’s progressive bona fides like a man reading off a woke résumé. “Our church was really active in LGBTQ rights in the 90s. We caught some attention by letting an atheist join our church in the 2000s,” he noted proudly.
Then came the revelation that should raise considerably more than eyebrows. Talarico disclosed that in the 2010s his church “again stirred some controversy by housing an undocumented family, a mother and son, who were close to being deported by ICE.”
“So again, the idea that Christianity is just another word for causing trouble,” he added, apparently viewing the deliberate obstruction of federal immigration enforcement as a feature of his faith rather than a legal problem.
Harboring illegal aliens to shield them from ICE is not a gray area. It is a federal crime under 8 U.S.C. § 1324, which makes it unlawful to knowingly conceal, harbor, or shield undocumented individuals from detection. Talarico appears to be bragging about exactly that on camera.
This is not the first time Talarico has demonstrated a creative approach to Christian theology. He has previously argued that free government healthcare is a Christian principle because Jesus healed the sick. He has also claimed that “God is nonbinary,” a theological position that is unlikely to appear in any major denomination’s statement of faith.
Talarico is running for U.S. Senate in Texas, a state that has been on the front lines of the border crisis, where communities have dealt firsthand with the consequences of the open-borders policies his worldview supports. Texas voters will have an opportunity to weigh his unique interpretation of Scripture against their lived experience of what happens when immigration law is treated as optional.
His views, and his church’s admitted actions, deserve full public scrutiny.
