(DC Pundit) – There are many things the Islamic Republic of Iran fears: American military power, Israeli precision strikes, crippling economic sanctions. But if President Donald Trump follows through on what he hinted at Tuesday in the Oval Office, the regime in Tehran may soon be facing something that terrifies them far more than any of those: their own people, armed and ready to fight back.
When asked point-blank whether he planned to provide weapons to Iranian civilians, the same people whose protests helped ignite the current conflict, Trump didn’t exactly slam the door shut on the idea.
“I don’t want to say that, but yes,” Trump replied.
The president then laid out in stark, plain language exactly why an unarmed civilian population stands no chance against a regime willing to slaughter its own citizens without hesitation.
“They don’t have any guns,” Trump said. “You could have 200,000 people protesting, and five or six sick people with guns, and when they start shooting them right between the eyes, and you see a guy fall, and then another one fall, and you have no guns, very few people would be able to stand there.”

Trump indicated the regime had already killed “42,000” protesters, a staggering and horrifying number that puts the brutality of Iran’s ruling class in painful perspective.
The president had touched on the same theme the night before in an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, where he made his thinking even clearer.
“If they had guns, they would fight back. I’m convinced of that,” Trump said. “But you know, you can’t have an unarmed population against people with AK-47s and stand there, even if you have 250,000 people. They lost 42,000 people in the first two weeks. I don’t really want to see that. They have to have guns. And I think they’re getting some guns. As soon as they have guns, they’ll fight like, as good as anybody there is.”
This is precisely why the Second Amendment matters, folks. An armed citizenry is the last line of defense against tyranny, a lesson the Iranian people are learning in the most brutal way imaginable.
Whether Trump’s comments represent a formal policy shift remains to be seen. What is certain is that the Islamist successors of Khomeini’s 1979 revolution fear their own people far more than any external enemy. And they should.
